Norwegian Joy

A day aboard Norwegian Joy can shift quickly from panoramic scenery to full-speed fun. Part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway Plus Class, the ship was built in 2017 and extensively refurbished in 2024, bringing updated accommodations and expanded spaces to a vessel carrying approximately 3,776 guests at double occupancy. Its personality is modern and energetic, yet several of its best spaces are designed simply for slowing down and enjoying the view.

High above the water, the Norwegian Joy Speedway turns the upper deck into a multi-level racetrack where guests can compete around sweeping curves at sea. Nearby attractions keep the energy going, while adults have a completely different escape at Vibe Beach Club. The Thermal Suite at Mandara Spa offers another quieter retreat, making it easy to alternate between activity and relaxation without leaving the ship.

The scenery often becomes an attraction of its own. Large windows and open-air spaces make Joy particularly rewarding on Alaska voyages, where mountains, glaciers, and narrow coastal passages can remain in view for hours. At other times, longer journeys toward Central America introduce a completely different backdrop, including voyages associated with the Panama Canal and ports along Mexico and Costa Rica.

Food and social life flow naturally through the ship rather than being confined to one dining district. The Waterfront places restaurants and seating along an open-air promenade, allowing guests to dine beside the sea, while three complimentary main dining rooms and numerous specialty venues provide plenty of variety throughout the cruise. Drinks at an outdoor bar, dinner under the stars, and a late-night lounge can all become part of the same evening.

Entertainment adds another dimension after dark, with theater productions, live performances, music, and interactive activities spread across the ship. Norwegian Joy has hosted Broadway-style productions including Footloose, along with the visually driven Elements, which combines music, choreography, aerial performance, and special effects. Entertainment offerings can evolve over time, but the ship remains designed around active evenings and multiple venues rather than a single nightly show.

Accommodation choices extend from Solo, Inside, Oceanview, and Balcony staterooms to spacious suites and The Haven by Norwegian. The Haven creates a more private experience within the larger ship, while Balcony accommodations make particularly good use of Joy’s scenic itineraries by giving guests their own outdoor space to watch the landscape unfold.

Norwegian Joy works especially well for guests who like contrasts: a morning spent watching dramatic scenery, an afternoon racing around the top deck, dinner beside the ocean, and a quieter retreat when the day winds down. That ability to move between excitement and relaxation gives the ship a personality that feels distinctly its own.
